The annual Lord Mayor’s presentation took place at Fitzalan High School in Cardiff on Wednesday 11th September, recognising the achievement of the young people who have gained Scouting’s highest Awards and valuable Skills for Life over the past year.
These awards require a level of determination and effort that reflect both the personality and character of the individual.
Cardiff’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Helen Lloyd Jones presented the young people with a certificate and a white Scout neckerchief bearing the City Crest embroidered on its point and said, “you should be proud at what you have achieved, and it is a unique honour for you to be able to support the Lord Mayor and represent Scouting at such prestigious events”.
The troop is enlisted to support the Lord Mayor whenever requested, at events like the Remembrance Day parade and civic carol service.
During the evening, several Scouts shared what they did to achieve their award along with inspiring words from Area Youth Lead Fran Feehan to encourage younger members to aim high and achieve their King’s Scout Award and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
King’s Scout award recipient Kathy Fletcher said “I’m very proud to say that I am now a King’s Scout. The process of achieving the King’s Scout Award is not an easy one – but the journey has allowed me to experience the very best Scouting and life has to offer. I started this award as an Explorer Scout and continued to progress it as an adult volunteer and Network member across multiple Counties and Areas within the UK. I didn’t set out with the aim to complete this award – but by contributing to Scouting in my areas and taking a leap at all opportunities with an open-minded perspective – here I am today! What’s next?? I’ve always had the passion to help others, and this has very much been the foundation of everything I did to achieve this award – My passion for scouting is as strong as ever! I would encourage all current scouts to make the most of this family and anyone who is interested, to consider giving scouting a try! There’s a role for absolutely everyone in this global organisation that I consider my second family!”.
In total there were a fantastic 67 Chief Scout Gold, 27 Platinum, 10 Diamond, 5 King’s Scout award and 8 Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards presented in the presence of parents, local dignitaries and Lord-Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith.
