We are pleased to announce Claudia has been appointed lead volunteer for Cardiff North District.
We asked Claudia to introduce herself and here is what she said:
I started my Scouting journey in Western Europe in 1976 as a Girl Guide with 1st The Hague Guide Company and continued enjoying my experiences once I moved to Devon, initially as a Guide and then a Ranger in Exeter. On leaving for University, in 1985 I wanted to continue my Young Leader role and started Scouting for real as a Venture Scout Leader in Surrey which I continued when I moved to Oxford. Eventually I settled in Somerset for nearly a decade and held a number of District and County roles within sections (Venture Scouts), ADC (VS and Leader Training) and Group Scout Leader, plus Leader Training for all sections across Somerset.
It was here that I learnt that Scouting can be improved and changed for the modern era….I was allowed to set up VenturePlus for those aged just over 21 who were timed out of Venture Scouts, but still wanted to participate in Scouting activities. It was here that Scout Network was born.
In 1996 I moved to Wales I initially settled in Caerphilly and continued with Sectional, District, Area and Training roles until moving to Cardiff where I have scouted ever since. As GSL at 1st Radyr I expanded the Group to six sections and enjoyed the hands-on sectional age range from 6 to 14. When the Afon District was reconfigured, I was invited to join Cardiff North District as DDC covering the same younger age range for Scouting which I have done since 2017.
I have now taken the final leap to Lead Adult Volunteer and I am looking forward to the challenge as the age range has increased again from 4 (Squirrels) to 25 (Network) years.
I hope that I will help to encourage the exiting and future leadership teams to deliver the Scouting Programmes that our young people deserve. In return I hope to get to meet lots of smiling people of all ages challenging themselves and enjoying the many experiences offered in Scouting.
