We are Students for Organ Donation, a Cardiff University Student lead society. Our aim is to start the conversation around organ donation and give everyone the freedom to make their personal informed choice.
As part of our society, we deliver a lesson aimed at years 5 and 6 surrounding the topic of organ donation. This encourages the pupils to learn more about the topic and ask questions in a safe environment without stigma or sadness. All of our volunteer teachers are trained on delivering our interactive lesson which is approved by NHS organ donation specialists, to ensure we share factual and non-bias information.
Over the last few years, we have visited many schools in the Cardiff and Vale area and received wonderful feedback from both teachers and pupils. Please see attached a document with more information about our society, the teaching we deliver and feedback we have received so far!
We understand that this can be a sensitive topic. Although the personal decision to opt in or out of organ donation doesn’t need to be made before the late teenager years, approaching the conversation young and encouraging children to discuss the topic with their families makes a challenging conversation more normal and much easier within the household. Although Wales adopted an opt-out system in 2015, the final decision as to whether to donate organs is always made by the individuals loved ones, therefore our aim is to normalise and encourage all families to have this conversation early.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like more information or let us know if this is something your scout groups would be interested in this academic year (2023-24). Our lessons are very interactive and although we focus on years 5 and 6 in schools, the teaching can be tailored to any age group.
Best Wishes,
